Dragons & Enemies (Defined)

Most business owners are unwittingly standing in the way of their own business growth.

Many claim impediments to breakthrough growth are based on external factors such as competition, the recession, employees, distributors, banks, etc.

These forces may indeed be creating challenges for business growth. But, consider two propositions that could apply to most small to medium sized business challenges:

  1. The Owner is Most Always a Part of the Problem
  2. Outside Forces will Always Be Working Against the Business

Agree or disagree, here are some considerations:

The Owner Is Usually In the Way

As a company grows, the owner (or primary decision maker) typically is the most passionate about the business, is usually the best sales person and almost always has deep technical knowledge that far surpasses anyone else in the company.

During these stages, the owner’s skill set needs to change, sometimes at remarkable speed. This typically occurs in a way the owner is not prepared for, or at least does not have the experience with. Most owners have a very difficult time recognizing this and then getting out of the way to either a) grow those new skill sets, or b) enroll new talent to come on board.

The Enemy Within

Recall Walt Kelly’s famous 1971 original cartoon and quote, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

I have never seen a significant business problem where the owner did not also play a major role, either in how the owner viewed the problem or in being the road block itself.

This moment when the owner fully accepts that the ‘Enemy is Within’ and that he or she is a big part of the problem is often a huge moment of clarity and the beginning of an opportunity to overcome ANY obstacle.

Abraham Lincoln said, “Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?”

What about those external forces on which we place blame? Are we saying that all we need to do is think our way through problems, or get out of the way and everything will be solved?

Of course, not.

The challenges that all businesses face such as market pressure, rising costs, and changing technology are real and an integral part of the game called “running a business.”  These external challenges are ‘Dragons.’ We all have them; they come in all shapes and sizes; and they are simply part of the process of running a business.

OUR DRAGONS ARE REAL.
THEY CAN BE DANCED WITH
AVOIDED, OR SLAYED.

In order to slay your Dragons with ease, the most effective leaders are always looking to identify, acknowledge and address their Enemies Within.
